How to Remove Paint Scuffs From Your Car

Blog

Have you ever walked out to your car and found paint transfer or paint scuffs on it? If so, another vehicle most likely got too close and the paint from their vehicle rubbed off onto yours. Or, maybe you were backing out of a garage and came too close to the side and the paint from the wall rubbed off on your vehicle. Paint scuffs are frustrating, especially when they are very noticeable on your vehicle. The good news is, there are some things you can do to get your car looking good again.

Here are a few ways to remove paint scuff from your car.

Remove the Paint Scuff Yourself

If there is just a small paint scuff on your vehicle, you may try removing it yourself. Before you do, however, it's a good idea to have a good understanding of the paint on your vehicle. Most vehicles have the following layers of paint:

  • E-coat. This layer contains an anti-corrosive coating.
  • Primer. This layer ensures that the paint adheres to the vehicle.
  • Basecoat. This layer contains the actual color and makes the car look nice.
  • Clearcoat. This transparent outermost layer protects the paint underneath it.

In the best-case scenario, the paint scuff on your car has only affected the clear coat. If this is the case, you can try to remove the paint scuff yourself. One of the best ways to do this is to spray WD-40 on the paint scuff then wipe it away with a wet pad. If you notice the base coat underneath has been affected, find the exact color of your base coat and touch it up yourself.

Take Your Vehicle to an Automotive Collision Repair Shop

If you are not comfortable removing paint scuff from your vehicle, take it to an automotive collision repair shop. Technicians that work in an automotive collision repair center specialize in car paint. You might also consider taking your vehicle to a professional if the paint scuff is large or if the scuff is accompanied by scratches that you don't want to buff out yourself.

Depending on how the paint scuff got there, your vehicle might also have small dents that may need to be repaired as well. Sometimes you won't notice any further damage until you have removed the paint scuff from the clear coat. If a large area of base coat or primer has been affected, taking your vehicle to an automotive collision repair shop may be the only way to fix it.

A New Look

When I graduated from college, I was able to purchase my first car. After much searching for the perfect vehicle, I selected a white sedan. This car has always been special to me because I earned the money to pay for it by myself. I even still own it. However, because it’s 13 years old now, it really needs to be painted. Instead of hiring someone to repaint it white, I’m considering trying something different. I would like to have a professional paint it either black or silver. On this blog, you will discover how to give an older vehicle a new look by hiring someone to paint it a different color.
