How To Use Touch Up Paint To Fix Small Chips

Blog

Paint chips on your car service are inevitable. Most people initially ignore small paint chips until there is a noticeable change in color or rust starts to form. Unfortunately, this is when the project becomes much more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. This is why most car owners just take their car to an auto body repair shop. However, if you spot the problems early, you can easily fix small paint chips on your own. This article explains how to repair small paint chips and just touch up the paint.

Do You Need to Patch?

First of all, you need to determine whether or not you need to patch your paint chip before fixing it. If your paint chip is smaller than the end of your pinky, you probably don't need to use any patch or auto body filler. However, if you noticed that your paint is basically just rubbed off and there is no indentation, you can probably get away with covering this area with just the touch up paint. If there is an actual hole or large dent underneath your chip, you will probably need to fill it with auto body filler before applying the touch up paint.  Auto body filler is actually very easy to work with and you can find it at most auto and home improvement stores.

Using Touch Up Paint

Touch up paint is very easy to use, but you need to quickly prep the area. If there is rust formation underneath the chip, you will need to sand it away. You just need a small corner of auto sandpaper to do this minimal sanding. This is also helpful because it slightly roughs up the paint surface, creating a better surface for the new paint to stick to.

Applying the New Paint

For the best results, you should definitely get your touch up paint directly from the car manufacturer. This way your colors are bound to be more true. These small cans of touch up paint are very convenient. They even have a small brush built into the lead. They are also premixed with primer and you don't need to add any sealant for clearcoat. Basically, all you need is the touch up paint.

The key to applying the paint is to put it on as sparingly as possible. You want to do several thin coats as opposed to one thick coat. This way you create a smoother finish. For more information, contact companies like High Point Body & Paint.

A New Look

When I graduated from college, I was able to purchase my first car. After much searching for the perfect vehicle, I selected a white sedan. This car has always been special to me because I earned the money to pay for it by myself. I even still own it. However, because it’s 13 years old now, it really needs to be painted. Instead of hiring someone to repaint it white, I’m considering trying something different. I would like to have a professional paint it either black or silver. On this blog, you will discover how to give an older vehicle a new look by hiring someone to paint it a different color.
