4 Steps For Removing Rust On Your Older Vehicle

Blog

If you have an older car, you may see rust on the exterior at one point or another. In order to bring your older car back to life, you will want to have this rust removed. Here are four steps to doing this:

  1. Inspect the Damage: The first thing that you will want to do is inspect for the extent of the damage. Of course, you probably already see areas that suffer from a brown-red colored rust spot, but you also want to look for small bubbles in the paint, which can indicate that there is also rust underneath the paint that's not seen no the surface.
  2. Remove the Rust: Once you have inspected for damages, you can determine just how bad it really is. If there was only a small amount of rust, then you can easily remove it on your own. You will want to do this by first using a sand disc to smooth out the area, and then using fine sandpaper to make the job a bit smoother on the surface. Once this has been done, take a small cloth to remove the excess debris. However, if the extent of the rust has created many bubbles in the paint, then you will want to take it to an auto body repair shop.
  3. Paint the Affected Area: Once you have sanded the area, you will need to paint it to match the rest of your vehicle. You can find the paint code for your vehicle in your owner's manual. If you do not have your owner's manual, you can visit an auto body shop who will find the best match possible. Once you have the paint and primer, you will want to block off the surrounding areas, apply the primer, wait overnight, and then apply the actual paint. When painting, let the paint stand for five minutes before applying another coat. This is going to help you better determine whether or not another coat is necessary because the paint will start to show its real color once slightly dry.
  4. Wash the Car: Once the paint has settled over night, you will want to wash your car down. First, removing the tape or newspaper that you used to block off the surrounding area, then rinse the area gently with cold water and then wax to give it a shine.

By knowing the four steps to getting rid of rust on your vehicle, you can increase both the appeal and value of your car.

A New Look

When I graduated from college, I was able to purchase my first car. After much searching for the perfect vehicle, I selected a white sedan. This car has always been special to me because I earned the money to pay for it by myself. I even still own it. However, because it’s 13 years old now, it really needs to be painted. Instead of hiring someone to repaint it white, I’m considering trying something different. I would like to have a professional paint it either black or silver. On this blog, you will discover how to give an older vehicle a new look by hiring someone to paint it a different color.
